Families attend Back to School Night

Back to School Success!

By Jill Lauren Quaranta, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent

The month of September has been a very busy one for the staff, students, and families of Eatontown! School started on September 4th and lessons are now well underway in all of our classrooms!

Each school in the district hosted a Back to School Night where parents and caregivers came to meet the principals and teachers, see classrooms, and learn more about the programs, services, and organizations available to families both within the school and in the broader Eatontown community.

Teachers provided an overview of their curriculum and highlighted key projects and learning goals for the upcoming school year, and shared their educational philosophies with attendees. A resource fair was set up at each school's Back to School Night as well, where families could learn about other things that the school district offers, including special education, health, technology, and more. Parents and caregivers were also able to meet representatives from the PTA, Eatontown Public Library, Lions Club, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Eatontown Baseball and Eatontown Softball, and much more.

Now that we are heading into the month of October, students will be diving deeper into their learning and many more events will be coming soon. If you missed out on Back to School Night, join us at one of the upcoming events - there are lots of things happening in the schools all year and we would love to see you there!

Interview with an Educator

Welcome, Dr. Okuniewicz!

Our new Woodmere School Principal

By Jill Lauren Quaranta, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent

Dr. Megan Okuniewicz

At the August 25th Board of Education meeting, Dr. Megan Okuniewicz was appointed as the new principal of Woodmere School. Dr. Okuniewicz brings with her a wealth of knowledge and a genuine passion for education, as well as expertise in social emotional learning. Her dedication to students and families is a perfect match for the values and mission of our school community. We know that, under her leadership, Woodmere School will continue to grow and provide a warm, supportive, and enriching environment for every child.

We wanted to get to know Dr. Okuniewicz better, so we asked her some questions about herself. Read her story below!

Q: What made you want to become an educator?

A: I started as a Literature major in college because I had a teacher in high school who gave me a love of reading, but in college my desire to educate people on living a healthy, active lifestyle made me want to become a teacher, and I continued on the path to education while keeping my minor in Literature.

Q: If you could be a shadow to anyone throughout history, who would it be and why?

A: Jane Austen. I had an understanding of her in my younger life. I appreciated everything that she wrote about socially and her ability to be proud of who she was. It's important to stand up for what you believe in. I feel that it is important as a leader to have convictions.

Q: What is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?

A: I love plants and animals as much as I love working with kids. I feel like I have a 6th sense about animals and when I retire I want to do something with animals, maybe on a farm.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

A: Stay consistent in everything you do, even though that is seemingly hard at times. Even if the road gets rocky, if you keep a consistent direction it will pay off.

Q: What are you looking forward to doing in this role?

A: I am really looking forward to bringing the school together and making a community, and building a welcoming atmosphere. I am looking forward to getting to know my students and staff and I know that takes time, but I want to make it something special, something that everyone can remember. Giving students opportunities to find their own path and passions is a main priority.

Preschool Preview

By Samantha Visinski, Preschool Program Administrative Assistant

October is an exciting month at Eatontown Public Schools! Our teachers and staff have planned lots of fun and engaging activities for our EPS students. One special highlight this month for all of our Preschool students is a visit from our very own Eatontown Fire Department!

Firefighters will stop by to teach students important fire safety tips, show their special gear, give everyone a close-up look at the fire truck and all the tools they use to help keep us safe. It's sure to be a fun and educational visit for everyone!

Brightening the Buildings: A Brand New Mural at Meadowbrook

By Tiffany Boufford, Meadowbrook School Principal

This year, the Meadowbrook School community is excited to unveil a brand-new mural in the front hallway—a project chosen entirely by our students!

Meadowbrook Eagles Spread Your Wings And S.O.A.R.

Last fall, students had the unique opportunity to cast their ballots in a voting booth to decide which mural design would brighten our halls. After much anticipation, the winning design was announced, and over the summer, it was brought to life by Mrs. Boufford.

The finished mural is more than just a beautiful piece of artwork—it represents our shared commitment to instilling confidence in our students and encouraging them to SOAR to their highest potential. With bold Eagle wings stretching across the wall, the mural also provides a perfect spot for students to pose and “spread their wings.” Already, it has become a source of pride, inspiration, and a joyful photo opportunity for our entire school community.

Character Counts in Third Grade

By Tara Micciulla, Director of Education

The third grade classes at Woodmere School have kicked off their first reading module by diving into stories filled with interesting and meaningful characters! Throughout this unit, students will explore fictional characters who learn important life lessons as their stories unfold. Students will analyze how a character’s actions, thoughts, dialogue, and interactions with others shape how they are perceived and how they grow as individuals based on the experiences they encounter. This learning ties in beautifully with our Leader in Me program.

Flying Books

As students read and analyze characters, they will identify which of the 7 Habits each character demonstrates (or fails to demonstrate), examine how those traits impact others, and make personal connections by comparing themselves to characters who show leadership or growth. By the end of the unit, students will set personal goals to develop similar positive traits they admire in the characters they read about. With great stories as their guide, our third graders are well on their way to becoming leaders both in and out of the classroom!

Smart Boards

Enhancing Education: Vetter School Elevates Teaching with Smart Board Technology

By Angela Torres, Margaret L. Vetter School Principal

Vetter School is moving forward with innovation through the full integration of newly updated smart board technology.

This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to enhancing collaboration, supporting student engagement, and preparing learners with the skills needed for success in the 21st century.

Over the past month, Megan Drury, the Senior Desktop Support Technician, met with each grade level team during their Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions to provide targeted professional development. These PLCs served as more than just training sessions—they became spaces for true collaboration and professional learning. Teachers explored the smart boards’ updated features together, discussed how they could be applied across content areas, and supported one another in developing new strategies for instruction.

Teachers shared that the ability to run applications, videos, and media directly on the smart board, without using laptop space, has been a game-changer. This functionality allows them to keep students actively engaged with interactive lessons while simultaneously tracking student data on their computers.

By leveraging the PLC model, teachers not only gained hands-on experience but also built a collective vision for how technology can enhance student learning. The exchange of ideas across grade levels and departments exemplified the district’s goal of fostering professional growth through collaboration.

This work represents an important step in the district’s broader vision for instructional technology: ensuring that staff have the tools, training, and professional learning structures needed to maximize technology for student success.

Memorial School Looks Ahead

By Kristoffer Brogna, Memorial School Principal

Students returned to Memorial School after a relaxing and well-deserved summer break. This year had a fresh feeling, as the sixth graders got to experience a new school after leaving Margaret L. Vetter School. All students acclimated well and are on track for a great year.

Some exciting updates we implemented last year and brought back this year include digital hall passes (replacing the often-lost paper ones) and a nice update to the supplemental learning tools we utilize during the day. These changes are designed to enhance student safety and create a smoother day-to-day experience.

Back to School Night took place on September 16, 2025. Based on suggestions from previous years, we shifted to an Open House format instead of the traditional "follow your child’s schedule" setup. Parents got to meet their students’ teachers in a more laid back, social environment. The evening went well, and we received helpful feedback—both positive and constructive. As always, we aim to improve and adapt to best support our students and families.

One of the key messages we shared with students this September is the importance of taking ownership of their learning journey. At Memorial School, we believe that when students are held accountable and provided with the right tools, success is within everyone’s reach.

To ensure all students have what they need to thrive, we have expanded our intervention and enrichment opportunities across the board. This year, students have access to a wide range of support and challenge programs, including:

🧠 Gifted & Talented (G&T)
⭐ Honors Classes
🎨 Art Enrichment
📘 Study Halls
🛠️ Targeted Intervention Periods
🔁 Special Alternatives
🧩 Flex Club

No student should feel like they are navigating the year alone. We have made it clear: if you need help, just ask—and you will get it.

By providing these varied pathways for support and growth, we are building a culture where effort, responsibility, and curiosity are celebrated, and every student is empowered to reach their full potential.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the school—we are looking forward to even more parental involvement throughout the year!

Administrative Announcements

Changes in State Assessments 2025-2026

By Scott T. McCue, Superintendent of Schools

I am happy to welcome our school community back from summer break. The school year has started strong and there will be many new as well as exciting news ahead. On August 22, 2025, school districts across NJ were informed that the NJ Student Learning Assessment would be changed to the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment-Adaptive for students in grades 3-8 beginning this school year.

State of New Jersey Department of Education

What does adaptive mean in this context? According to the NJ Department of Education (2025), “A computer-adaptive test (CAT) is an assessment tool that determines future questions based on a student's responses to prior questions, creating a more personalized experience for each learner. This approach can help reduce testing anxiety by presenting students with questions closer to their current level, encouraging confidence and focus. An adaptive assessment measures each student’s knowledge with greater precision since the students will receive more items closer to their current level.”

There will be a field test or practice test given to students in grades 4-8 in ELA and mathematics this fall. The regular testing administration will begin in May 2026. If you have additional questions, please visit the NJ Department of Education website at https://www.nj.gov/education/assessment/adaptive/faq.shtml.

The district will provide additional updates in the future as it receives more information.

Have a safe and successful school year!
